Life Cycle Assessment is an environmental analysis tool to evaluate the potential environmental impacts of products or services along its life cycle. The standardized methodology of LCA is described in ISO 14040/44: 2006. The scope of LCA studies covers not only the processing stage but also upstream (i.e. raw material production – agriculture, livestock, fisheries and aquaculture & packaging production and downstream (i.e. distribution, consumption and waste disposal) activities including related transport in all stages. The life cycle impact assessment results covering multiple impacts in quantitative terms facilitate the identification of hot spots (i.e. the main life cycle stage and activities causing significant impacts) to derive the strategies for life cycle management to improve the environmental performance of product and promote the shift towards sustainable agriculture and food production systems including more sustainable food consumption pattern via environmental certification and labelling schemes.

LCA in Thailand

LCA has been in Thailand since 1997 when first introduced as a new ISO standard. Life cycle thinking is appreciated as an approach to move towards sustainable development. Led by the National Science and Technology Development Agency since 2001, the local capacity on LCI national databases, LCIA methodologies, and LCA applications for policy and private companies were built including a network to expand the applications of LCA into practices both for policy makers and private companies. At the ASEAN level, Thailand is the first country that has been developing the national LCI databases including agri-food datasets. The LCA applications in Thailand include hot spot analysis, carbon footprint-carbon footprint reduction-carbon neutral-upcycle carbon footprint labels,  water footprint, organisation LCA, green GDP, sustainability performance indicators, and policy applications particularly in the area of food, fuel and climate change. Thailand also took the lead since 2012 in the creation of the regional network on “LCA Agri-Food ASIA” for developing the Asian food database and enhancing the applications of LCA in agri-food products.

LCA AgriFOOD ASIA

LCA AgriFOOD ASIA serves as a regional forum to build up the capacity and exchange knowledge on LCA application for agri-food products to enhance the collaborative projects at the regional level.

ICGSI

ICGSI is a trans-disciplinary international forum focusing on green process engineering as a path towards sustainable development of societies and regions.

Aims of the conference

  • A global forum for LCA community to share their perspectives on adopting LCA
  • A scientific forum for LCA developers and practitioners to meet for exchanging ideas for further development of LCA from theory into practice
  • A network forum for policy makers and companies to meet LCA academicians for cross-fertilization on their knowledge and experiences

Venue

Shangri La hotel

http://www.shangri-la.com

It is a 5-star hotel located in the centre of Bangkok, by the Chaophraya river, offering a very lovely atmosphere and environment. From the airport, you can come to the hotel by:

  • Taxi: you can queue for a taxi on the first floor, the taxi will take you to the express way and get down at Silom (near Ledsin hospital). It will take at least 45 min from the airport to hotel. Reaching BKK in the early morning is recommended, to avoid the traffic (if you are not used to it).
  • Skytrain: you can take the airport link line to get off at Phaya Thai station, then connecting the Sukhumwit line from Phaya Thai to Siam station and change to the Silom line from Siam to Taksin station. The hotel is connected to the Taksin station.
